The Story of Thanksgiving with Preschool Children

Posted on 10-23-2017

Wondering how to explain to your child how Thanksgiving came about? Look no further! Here is the preschooler approved breakdown of what happened on that day.

When retelling the story of Thanksgiving to your preschoolers, there are tons of different options to use and roads to take. Depending on the needs and wants of your child (or their attention span), you can put to use all sorts of festive ideas to elaborate on how exactly that turkey landed on that table.

Use all the books, movies, dinner table conversations, or comfy time on the couch you feel necessary to depict the story. There are many different variations with more or less colorful details, but here is the quick Pilgrim friendly version:

1. When the Pilgrims came to America, they worked hard to make a life for themselves. When retelling the story, establish values that your preschooler can work to understand and relate to in their own lives.

2. They planted food, met the Native Americans, and when the harvest came, they celebrated. Tell it simply. They worked hard, made friends, and enjoyed the reward of their labor.

3. The Pilgrims celebrated their hard work and new friendships. Make the story relatable to where your child can understand by including relationships with others.

4. The Pilgrims gave thanks for what they had. Gratitude is one of the most important characteristics of the Pilgrims’ journey!

Keep in mind- it doesn’t take the world’s best storyteller to tell the story of Thanksgiving. Add a little creativity, some hard work, and a lot of gratitude and you’re set--like the Mayflower across the Atlantic!
