Helping Your Child Thrive in Preschool

Posted on 10-20-2015 | Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academy of Fort Mill

Attending preschool for the first time is a big adjustment for your preschooler and for you! For some children, the transition is more difficult because they are very shy and are more nervous in new social situations. It may seem like a daunting task to prepare your shy child for this new adventure but there are some simple steps you can take together to make the transition smoother. With a little preparation and encouragement, your child can successfully adapt to and thrive in preschool!

Join a Playgroup

Look for opportunities to place your child in new social situations. Ask around about local playgroups that meet near your home and make a habit of attending one at least once a week. As your shy child is exposed to new friends they will also have the comfort of having you nearby as they learn to interact. This asks as a great steppingstone to preschool!

Develop a Routine

Children thrive in a world that is somewhat structured and predictable. While it’s great to make time for spontaneity and adventure, establishing familiar patterns will build security into your child’s daily life. Before you begin the preschool routine, start a rhythm at home that will reflect what this new season will look like. Many preschools will allow you to take a tour of the school prior to the first day so make a date out of it! Visit the school, take your child out for ice cream or another sweet treat and talk about what you saw in the school. Familiarity brings security for every child and will help alleviate first day fears.

Talk to your child’s teacher

Your child’s teacher is committed to her students flourishing in the classroom. Having a discussion with your child’s teacher will help everyone be on the same page for the first day. It’s very normal for a preschooler to be nervous about this transition and it’s likely your child will not be the only shy child in the classroom. Your child’s teacher can help your child better understand what will be expected of her and how the classroom will be structured. Chances are your child will be making friends and thriving after only a few days of attending preschool!
