Fort Mill Daycare: Brain foods for your child

Posted on 12-05-2014

Parents understand that brain development in early childhood is extremely important. There are a variety of books and toys that can help stimulate a young child’s brain. However, proper nutrition is also extremely important for brain development. When discussing a healthy eating plan with your doctor, you can ask about some of these foods that contribute to healthy brain development in children. Always consult with your doctor or pediatrician for the best recommendations.

Eggs contain a nutrient known as choline. Studies have shown that choline is responsible for the creation of memory stem cells within the brain. The more stem cells we have in our brains, the better memory we have. Other vital nutrients found in eggs include protein, zinc and omega-3s.

Blueberries and strawberries both contain high levels of antioxidants and have been shown to improve cognitive ability. People who ingest substantial amounts of antioxidants have less tendency for diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Fatty fish are good sources of both vitamin D and omega-3s, which have been proven to protect the human brain from things such as cognitive decline. Sardines, salmon and tuna are options for a young child. Parents should never feed a child fish containing mercury. These fish include tilefish, king mackerel, and shark.

Many young children suffer from a deficiency in iron. Research has shown that even the smallest deficiency can lead to a sharp decline in cognitive ability. Beef is one of the best absorbed sources of iron, even in very small amounts.

Remember to discuss all eating choices for young children with your pediatrician before implementing a diet plan.
