Teaching Your Preschooler About Labor Day

Posted on 08-25-2017

Whether you catch a local parade with your preschooler or hang out by the pool together, you can teach your little one about the Labor Day holiday while you enjoy the long break from work! Falling at the end of summer, Labor Day heralds for many families a return to school routine as well as the welcome arrival of cooler temperatures and shorter days. You and your little one can have fun together as you learn about this popular American holiday!

The Labor Day holiday

The three-day weekend that makes up the Labor Day holiday has long been seen as the last celebration of summer before the fall season begins. Held on the first Monday of September, the holiday was first established around the turn of the 20th century to recognize the American worker and provide a respite from labor. Labor Day holds a rich significance throughout American culture and for many families it is a favorite holiday for vacation and play.

Teaching your preschooler about Labor Day

You can teach your preschooler about Labor Day through simple play activities during the holiday weekend!

• What better way to celebrate the hard work of the people in your community than by donning hats and coats and holding a parade around your neighborhood? Your preschooler will love dressing up as a doctor, a teacher, or a fireman, and you can talk about the valuable ways that people who do that work make a difference!

• You can enjoy the last days of summer heat and anticipate the cooler temperatures to come by setting up sprinklers in your yard and playing keep away with an inflatable ball. Your little one will love the simple sport, and you can talk about how Labor Day is a chance to celebrate the end of summer and the beginning of the fall season. Finish with chilled watermelon or ice-cold popsicles for a sweet treat!
